Caltrain, San Francisco Bay Area
Modernization Program

Electrifying Caltrain
Caltrain, a commuter rail system serving California’s San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, has electrified their fleet, replacing diesel trains between San Francisco and San Jose with electric multiple units (EMUs). They began work in 2017, with a budget of almost $2.5 billion, and launched their new trains in 2024. The electrified trains are a success. Not only do they reduce polluting emissions and lead to more on-time trains, but they have also surpassed pre-COVID 19 ridership levels.
Superior Expertise
For Caltrain, Cornerstone generated (and developed from sketches) structural engineering drawings with details for the construction and fabrication of the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) and the poles which are located along the rail line. Cornerstone started out providing office engineering on the project as well, and the work was so exemplary that the role was expanded to include project controls.
